Our Advanced Materials

Silicone Rubber

  • Exceptional Temperature Range: Our silicone compounds operate reliably in extreme temperatures, typically from -40°C to +200°C, with some capable of reaching +250°C.
  • Excellent Dielectric Properties: Ideal for high voltage applications, maintaining integrity under electrical stress.
  • Superior Flexibility & Durability: Remains flexible even at low temperatures, ensuring long service life and ease of installation.
  • High Resistance: Exhibits high abrasion and corona resistance. It also offers outstanding resistance to ozone, moisture, chemicals, flame, and weathering.
  • Safety: Low smoke, zero halogen (LSZH) characteristics and forms a non-conductive ash in fire situations.

F.E.P. (Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene)

  • High Dielectric Strength: Excellent for applications requiring robust insulation.
  • Small Diameter: Allows for use in space-constrained system package designs.
  • Bonding & Encapsulation: Our silicone-coated F.E.P. wires bond easily to silicone-based RTVs. Continuously etched F.E.P. wire allows for encapsulation with various potting materials without needing chemical etching.

Conductor Materials & Plating

  • In most instances, appliance wiring conductors are constructed of solid or stranded copper, nickel, or special alloys. When copper is used, it is usually required to have a coating of tin, silver, or nickel, either cladded or plated.
  • For 150°C rated constructions, individual wires within the conductor normally shall not be smaller than #24 AWG. 200°C wires require strands no smaller than #24 AWG.
  • Fixture and equipment wiring conductors are constructed of either solid or stranded nickel or copper, and when copper is used, it shall have a coating of tin, silver, or nickel.
  • For general Type FF & F wires, a 200°C rating is used with silver plated conductors only, while a 150°C rating is used for tinned copper conductors.

Wire Construction & Specifications

Understanding Wire Designations

  • AWG Size & Stranding: Guidance on how American Wire Gauge (AWG) and stranding construction (e.g., 7/30, 19/32) impact flexibility, current carrying capacity, and overall diameter. We offer sizes from 24 AWG to 500 MCM.
  • Wall Thickness & Overall Diameter (OD): Critical dimensions for insulation integrity and fit within your application. These are carefully controlled in our manufacturing processes.

Voltage & Temperature Ratings Explained

  • Our wires are designed for a wide range of operational voltages, from 300V up to 75kVDC, and AC ratings such as 1000V for UL3644.
  • Maximum operating temperatures are clearly defined for each product, ensuring safety and longevity.

Jacketing Options

When required, Rowe Industries supplies a fiberglass overbraid with a heat, flame, and moisture-resistant saturant, in accordance with commercial and military specifications. Our ST-1000 silicone insulation for UL3644 requires no unnecessary braids, making it easier to process.

Conductor Construction Rules

Appliance Wiring Conductors

In most instances, appliance wiring conductors are constructed of solid or stranded copper, nickel, or special alloys. When copper is used, it is usually required to have a coating of tin, silver, or nickel, either cladded or plated. For 150°C rated constructions, individual wires within the conductor normally shall not be smaller than #24 AWG, except solid conductors and some business machine wires which are defined by the applicable style requirements. 200°C wires require strands no smaller than #24 AWG.

Fixture & Equipment Wiring Conductors

Fixtures and equipment wiring conductors are constructed of either solid or stranded nickel or copper. When copper is used, it shall have a coating of tin, silver, or nickel, with individual wires within stranded conductors to be #26 to #36 AWG inclusive.

Compliance & Certifications

Underwriters Laboratories (UL)

We are approved to manufacture over 100 distinct UL Styles.

Our UL Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) is listed under UL File #E-61355.

Environmental Compliance and Materials Sourcing

Our commitment to safety and environmental standards is reflected in our adherence to global directives. All our standard silicone wires are REACH and ROHS compliant, ensuring they are free from specific hazardous materials banned in electronic equipment.

CONFLICT MINERALS POLICY – Rowe Industries is a manufacturer of wire, purchasing finished conductors and insulating them with specialized materials. In the process of manufacturing these products, we do consume components with materials in them that are of concern for “conflict minerals” such as copper and nickel. We do control the bill of materials as well as the approved supplier list for these materials. Rowe Industries does not file reports with the SEC, and are therefore not bound by the Conflict Minerals provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. However, we recognize that many of our customers are. In support of these customers, Rowe Industries will undertake reasonable due diligence within our supply chain to source products and materials from non-conflict sources and we have a program in place for obtaining this information, reviewing it, and a corrective action process if needed.

As regulatory requirements and hence, regulatory statements are revised often – and it is not practical to make these changes regularly on our website, we ask that you contact us directly if you have any questions regarding compliance information.

Construction & Compliance

  • All constructions are available with labels indicating their listing as recognized wiring materials by Underwriters’ Laboratories and Canadian Standards Association and as such incorporate all necessary markers, jackets, stripes, etc., to conform to applicable style requirements.
  • Where these labels are not required, Rowe Industries can supply these configurations or similar cables in custom materials designed to meet your exacting requirements.
  • Since Approval Agencies’ requirements are subject to periodic review and revision, constructions and data given herein are for information only. Please contact the factory for current specifications and approval status.

Application & Selection

Choosing Wire for Your Environment

Consider factors like extreme temperatures, exposure to chemicals or moisture, abrasion potential, and flexibility requirements. Our team can help you match the right material and construction.

Amperage (Ampacity) Considerations

Ampacity is not a fixed value for a given AWG size; it’s influenced by the installation environment, conductor material, insulation temperature rating, and more. Always use reliable engineering methods for calculation.

Special Considerations for Custom Designs

If your required style is not listed, or design requirements dictate specially manufactured items, please call us. We can assist in determining the best construction for your application. Technical requirements and design technology are constantly changing, and we strive to meet these evolving needs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the typical bend radius for your flexible silicone wires?

The minimum bend radius varies depending on the specific wire construction, including conductor size, stranding, and insulation wall thickness. A key advantage of our silicone compounds is their superior flexibility, which is maintained even at low temperatures. For the exact bend radius for a specific part number, or to discuss your application’s unique flexibility requirements, please contact our engineering team.

How does silicone insulation behave in a fire situation?

Our silicone rubber insulation is engineered to be flame resistant. In a direct fire situation, our advanced compounds exhibit low smoke, zero halogen (LSZH) characteristics and are designed to form a non-conductive ash, which helps to maintain circuit integrity.

What information do I need to provide for a custom wire request?

To help our engineers develop the perfect solution for your unique challenge, please provide as much detail as possible about your application’s needs. Key information includes:

  • Application Environment: Including temperature range and any exposure to chemicals, abrasion, or moisture.
  • Electrical Performance: Required voltage rating (KVDC or KVAC), capacitance, or specific impedance needs.
  • Physical Characteristics: Desired AWG size, conductor stranding, required flexibility, and any constraints on overall diameter (OD).
  • Compliance: Any specific UL, CSA, or Military standards the finished wire must meet.
